What kinds of programs are offered?
Discovering Broadway offers two distinct programs, writer’s retreats and master classes.
Our writer’s retreats are annual, two-week residencies where we bring writers from New York City to Indiana and provide a safe and creative space for them to incubate their new musicals. We decentralize the process of making a musical, which traditionally occurs in New York City, by moving those resources and professional personnel to Indiana.
Our master classes act as an intensive training program for aspiring students, ages ranging from 10-21, one-on-one training classes to connect our local Indianapolis youth with top-tier working professionals in entertainment. Discovering Broadway has designed this program to jumpstart careers, connect students to college scholarships, brand themselves with talent agencies, and make measurable impacts in their professions and personal lives.

How are shows selected for a Writer’s Retreats?
Discovering Broadway Inc. selects each new musical based on three criteria: 1) Is the musical likely to premiere 2) Will programming the musical be engaging, exciting, and create inclusive opportunities for the Indianapolis community? 3) Is this show an opportunity to employ diverse actors and musicians while creating engagement and interest for diverse audiences?
Shows are vetted by the Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Joel Kirk, who has been a professional theater director and producer for a decade. A Show Committee then screens music from the shows and gives insight into what pieces would best benefit the community. The Board of Directors votes to approve shows after they have been narrowed down to three final options.
What is the format of Discovering Broadway’s Master Classes?
Discovering Broadway’s Master Classes are in-person sessions led by top-tier working Broadway professionals in the entertainment industry. These professionals provide one-on-one training and individualized feedback to students, creating an immersive and educational experience.
Our Master Classes typically consist of an intimate class size, with approximately 20 students per session. These classes can cover various audition skills, including singing, dancing, acting, and more. Each class typically runs for about 2-3 hours, allowing for an immersive and comprehensive learning experience. Additionally, at the end of each class, we allocate time for a Q&A session between the students and our guest artist, providing a valuable opportunity for students to engage directly with industry professionals.
What ages are allowed to participate in the Master Classes?
Each class will specify the intended age range of students. Typically, our Master Classes are designed for aspiring young artists ranging between middle school and college (ages around 10 to 24). We aim to provide valuable training and mentorship to youth and young adults who are passionate about pursuing careers in the arts.
What skill level can participate in the Master Classes?
Our Master Classes are open to participants of all skill levels, from beginners to more experienced performers. Our instructors tailor their guidance to meet the individual needs and goals of each student.
Is financial assistance or scholarships available for Master Classes?
Yes! Discovering Broadway is committed to providing equitable access to our Master Classes for all individuals interested in further developing their craft. We offer scholarships and underwritten access to qualifying students, ensuring that financial limitations do not hinder participation.
